The TROPO is the first comprehensive refresh of the 4-inch Stratus All-Weather Rain Gauge, which was first introduced in 1973. Based on the design of NOAA’s National Weather Service official standard 8-inch rain gauge, the TROPO Precipitation Gauge employs the same dual-cylinder design to measure precipitation with a resolution of 0.01 inch (0.25 mm).
The inner cylinder holds 1 inch (25 mm) of precipitation, while the extra-large outer cylinder holds another 12.50 inches (317.5 mm) of rainfall, making the maximum capacity approximately 13.5″ (343 mm). The inner cylinder and funnel top cap are removable, allowing for the catchment of snowfall or other frozen precipitation, which can then be melted down or weighed to determine its liquid equivalent.
The gauge is made of UV-stabilized Polycarbonate, the same weather-resistant material used in greenhouses.

Field testing has demonstrated the TROPO rain gauge is accurate, and it incorporates observer-friendly features such as greater capacity, improved mounting bracket, and multiple mounting options. It is also made with higher quality plastic, resulting in longer useable life.
Emptying the outer gauge is easy with the TROPO. Slide the included handle onto the back of the gauge, and use the spout to control the pour into the smaller gauge.
It is strongly recommended that you remove both the funnel and inner cylinder during the winter months to prevent damage.
Yes. Even the most accurate tipping bucket rain gauges are considered too inaccurate for use in CoCoRAHS and other applications. However, the difference is typically within several hundredths to a tenth of an inch in our testing.
