For over five decades, the Stratus Rain Gauge has served storm spotters well. However, the gauge is not without its own set of issues: enter the Climalytic TROPO Precipitation Gauge. Based on the design of NOAA’s National Weather Service official standard 8-inch rain gauge, the 4-inch TROPO Precipitation Gauge employs the same dual-cylinder design to measure precipitation with a resolution of 0.01 inch (0.25 mm).

The first refresh of the Stratus since its 1973 release, the TROPO Precipitation Gauge is the only other gauge to be officially approved for use with CoCoRaHS. The gauge is made of UV-stabilized Polycarbonate, the same weather-resistant material used in greenhouses. While this material is the same as the Stratus, the TROPO has consistently demonstrated, over time in our tests, the ability to maintain its clear appearance for years after purchase and exposure to UV.
The inner cylinder holds one inch of precipitation, with additional rainfall overflowing into the larger outer cylinder, which holds approximately 13.5″ more for a total rainfall capacity of over 14″. During the winter months, remove the inner cylinder and funnel to capture and measure the moisture content of fallen snow. A digital scale, such as the Climalytic Digital Scale, can make those measurements even easier. (Note, the 4-inch size refers to the diameter of the funnel, not the capacity of the gauge).

Bulk Orders: A complete box holds 12 TROPO gauges; bulk orders in multiples of 12 ship the quickest. Bulk orders are available for customers who wish to deploy multiple gauges (e.g., schools, observation networks) but are not intended for resale. Climalytic will only provide support to the named purchaser when the product is purchased through authorized distributors and resellers, as is standard with most warranty claims.
